English Language Arts 7
Christine Léger, École secondaire du Sommet

The English Language Arts program reflects a continuum of learning. Grades 7 through 9 make up a key stage in this continuum with similarities in general outcomes and objectives. Specific expectations from students increase within the framework of these outcomes as students progress from grade 7 through grade 9. The following areas are the general curriculum outcomes of this program.

Curriculum Outcomes:

By the end of this stage of the curriculum, students should be able to:

  • Invite others to participate in discussions and thinks about what other people have said during a discussion

  • Contribute to small-group and whole-group discussions using a variety of strategies for effective talk

  • Demonstrate active listening and respect for others

  • Read a variety of texts including fiction and literature, non-fiction, and media texts from different provinces and countries

  • Locate information from a variety of sources

  • Give initial response, orally or in writing, to what is read or viewed

  • Recognize that print and media texts can be biased

  • Write for a variety of reasons

  • Understand that what is written and how it is written must fit the audience and the purpose for writing

  • Use a variety of technology for the purposes of communicating

Course outline:

The grade 7 course will revolve around the following language processes; reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. These will be developed interdependently through a variety of methods and activities. More specifically,  we will be doing a couple of in class novel studies. Students in grade 7 will learn the writing process and learn the steps to effectively develop their ideas into properly written works. Grammar and spelling skills will be a reoccurring theme throughout the year with the use of the Language Power series and the Canadian Spelling Program (7). A poetry section will be used to further develop student’s language processes. Each student will also be expected to independently study a minimum of four novels and will be encouraged to read independently throughout the year.

Evaluations:

Writing portfolio

Reading responses

Major assignments / reports / projects / tests

Oral presentations

Classroom work

Late work:

It goes without saying that to understand the material presented in class and to achieve the learning outcomes of English 7, students must complete all work and duties required.  In order to be assessed, the work must be passed in on time. An extension can be awarded for circumstances beyond the student’s control or if it has been arranged with the teacher ahead of time. Students who do not hand in their work by the due date will have one extra day to hand it in. If the work is still not handed in, the student will have a one hour period to finish and his work will be graded.
